Transferring to UMS
The University of Maine System (UMS) has developed tools to support the transfer process, whether preparing to transfer now or planning to transfer in the future. Each of these tools utilizes a student information system called MaineStreet. This system is how UMS manages all student records from admission and financial aid to registering for classes and paying bills. These tools allow access to the pieces that pertain to transfer credit and degree audit.
Course-by-Course Equivalency Chart (External Site) – Use this tool in MaineStreet to see a full list of how courses from one institution transfer to another on a course-for-course basis.
Maine Community College Transfer Initiatives & Resources – Including AdvantageU, General Education Transfer Block, Reverse Credit Transfer, and TransferME.
Transfer Guides – Use this guide to view program requirements at one of the UMS institutions and explore the courses currently available. If you are currently enrolled at any institution in Maine and planning to transfer to a UMS campus in the future, this is a great tool to help you with your current course selection process.

Types of Transfer Credit
Whether earning credit directly from completed coursework or prior learning assessment, transfer is awarded in four different ways: as a direct course equivalent, general education/core, general elective, or subject elective.
Direct course equivalents are awarded for specific courses offered at receiving institutions.
General education/core transfer credits satisfy general education/core requirements, such as social science or fine arts.
General elective credit (example GEL xxx) recognizes the college-level work completed, but it may not directly relate to a course or subject offered at the receiving institution.
Subject elective credit recognizes the subject of the transfer (example: PSY xxx), but the receiving institution does not have an equivalent course.
Transfer credits awarded to satisfy degree requirements will vary by program. Use the transfer credit evaluation tool to see how your transfer credits align with your desired program.
