The University of Maine at Farmington (UMF) offers early college pathways that guide students through foundational courses in a particular program/major. Students who complete a pathway in high school are more likely to succeed in the corresponding program/major once in college. Students who complete a pathway with UMF are recognized by the university and are given an edge in the admission process.

Early Childhood Education
This 4 course, 12-credit pathway, introduces students to coursework they will encounter as Early Childhood Education majors. While intended to give students an opportunity to build a sense of what the Early Childhood major is about, this pathway sets up students interested in education in general very well as they will hone their college writing skills, take a math course required by most education majors at UMF, in addition to learning about early childhood education and development.

Education & Teaching
This 4 course, 12 credit pathway allows students to gain a sense of what it is to be an education major and then a teacher. This pathway encourages students to explore what education is, where they might fit into it, and how it can be a force for positive change. Additionally, this pathway allows students to take courses that will apply across a wide breadth of UMF education majors, including secondary and elementary education.

Rehabilitation & Human Services
This 4 course, 12-credit pathway introduces students to the Rehabilitation Services major at UMF, the only major of its kind available at a public undergraduate institution in New England. Rehabilitation Services is intended for students who are committed to equity and justice and are passionate about helping people and experiential learning. They get the opportunity to learn how to advocate for others (and themselves), get a practical understanding of why humans do some of the things they do, and build a repertoire of skills that will allow them to make a difference in the lives of vulnerable populations. Students who complete this pathway will have courses that meet the core requirements of the Rehabilitation Services major at UMF.

Visual & Performing Arts
This 4 course, 12 credit pathway is intended to give students an opportunity to explore their creative depths and get a sense of what it might be like to major or minor in the arts at UMF. Even if a student does not intend to major in the arts or pursue a career in this field, cultivating one’s creativity is a valuable skill in today’s world and workforce. This pathway is also intended to be highly flexible and allow students to select courses that interest them or, more practically, fit their scheduling needs and preferences.

Whether students aspire to be great writers, are lovers of literature, or simply want to improve their communication skills, this Pathway will help students get where they want to be.
