An early college transcript shows all activity related to a student’s academic course work. The record includes a complete list of the courses as well as the grades and credits earned.
There are 6 campuses within the University of Maine System (UMS):
- University of Maine at Augusta (UMA)
- University of Maine at Farmington (UMF)
- University of Maine at Farmington (UMFK)
- University of Maine and its regional campus in Machias (UM)
- University of Southern Maine (USM)
- University of Maine at Presque Isle (UMPI)
Each campus within the UMS operates independently and maintains its own student records, including transcripts. If a student takes courses at multiple campuses, they will have a separate transcript for each campus and must request each one individually from the respective institution.
There are two types of transcripts, and the chart below highlights their differences.
Feature | Official Transcript | Unofficial Transcript |
---|---|---|
Source | Issued by the school’s office of student records | Available through student portals and self-printed |
Seal/Signature | Includes an official seal and signature | No official seal or signature |
Format | Usually in a sealed envelope or sent electronically | Often a digital copy or printed by the student |
Usage | Required for college applications, job applications, and official records | Used for personal reference or informal situations |
Cost | Usually requires a fee | Typically free to access |
Delivery Method | Sent directly to institutions or employers | Downloaded or printed by the student |
Unofficial transcripts are mostly used for personal record keeping and cannot be used for official purposes like college applications or job applications.

- If students are taking courses to transfer to another college, it is the student’s responsibility to confirm that those courses will transfer to the intended college and program.
- If students are taking courses to transfer to another college, the grades earned in those courses will appear on the student’s college transcript; however they will NOT be calculated into the student’s college GPA.
