At Machias, on the regional campus of the University of Maine, I teach creative writing, literary studies, and professional editing. I received my PhD in English from McGill University and my MFA in Creative Writing from the Stonecoast Program at the University of Southern Maine. I’m an author of five books about Maine, one of which was ranked among the top books on race by The New Republic.

“The beginning is always today.” – Mary Wollstonecraft

What DEI means to me:

For me, diversity, equity, and inclusion are founded on a commitment to social justice. Liberal studies are all about liberation. At Machias, difference and belonging are central to the college experience. Early on, I learned as an instructor that differences of opinion and perspective create the very conditions for a meaningful discussion. Creative writing is an art form that resonates powerfully with issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion. This is because creative writing elevates the personal voice and gives immediacy to experiences that might otherwise be marginal or lost.
