Since its inception in 2012, the Project Management Office (PMO) has evolved as a leader in establishing and implementing project management best practices in a way that promotes a positive project culture, enhances collaboration, increases efficiency, and ensures the successful delivery of IT projects that support the University’s mission and strategic goals.
The PMO provides guidance to the UMS community throughout an IT project lifecycle; from the initial project request through to project completion. The PMO’s mission is to provide an enterprise-wide approach to identify, prioritize, and successfully execute technology projects that are aligned with the University of Maine System strategic goals.
Project Initiation
The PMO is committed to facilitating the intake and review of all ideas and project requests for technology solutions that will support the strategic goals of the University of Maine System and enhance services to the UMS community. The PMO’s role is to collect ideas and project requests and ensure they are considered and prioritized in a consistent and transparent manner.
The first step towards proposing an IT project is to submit a Project Initiation Form (PIF). The PIF helps to summarize information about the proposed project’s objectives, requirements, estimated resources, schedule, and budget. The PMO is always available to provide guidance while a PIF is being completed.

Project Management Consultation Services
When a project does not require that the UMS:IT Project Management Office directly oversee it, a campus-based or other resource may be identified to manage the project. In such cases, the PMO can offer PM tools, mentoring, and other support as requested. To request Project Management Services, please visit Request PMO Consultation Services.
