Section 404.2 Appointment – Police Officers

Policy Statement:
The Board of Trustees may, or such administrators of the University of Maine System as the Trustees designate for this purpose, appoint persons to act as police officers. The powers granted by the appointment as a University Police Officer are confined within the limits of the property owned by or under the control of the University of Maine System, and within such limits a University Police Officer possesses all of the powers of a police officer in criminal cases and civil violations. The Board may authorize the University of Maine System’s full-time police officers who have met the requirements of the Maine Revised Statues, Title 25, section 2804-C to perform any of the acts described in Title17-A, section 15 while outside of the limits of the property owned by or under control of the University of Maine System if the law enforcement agency of a foreign municipality in which the arrest is to be made had requested assistance in advance by cooperative agreement. The police powers granted by appointment as a University Police Officer shall automatically terminate when the individual ceases to be an employee of the University of Maine System.
Procedures:
Each campus shall keep the names of all individuals designated as University Police Officers or other security job title and who have been granted police powers under the terms of this policy and applicable State Law along with a current official campus map delineating campus boundaries and other parcels of real estate under its control which are subject to the jurisdiction of its University Police.
